Battling for Equal Rights
Once the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, many of the suffragists felt they had fulfilled their responsibilities. Alice Paul, however, was determined to have equal rights for women in politics and society. In 1923, Paul declared that she would be fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment. From 1923 until 1972, when the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was passed by Congress, Alice Paul worked tirelessly on this task (Alice Paul Institute). Despite all of her efforts, the amendment was never ratified by the states.
